Just outside the main gate of ancient Jerash lay the hippodrome, built in the 2nd c. CE as a locale for chariot racing and used as such until sometime in late 3rd c. CE, when one of the largest pottery workshops in Jordan was established inside, "mass producing vast amounts of ceramics that ranged from tiles and pipes, to storage ware, plain and decorated common and fine wares, as well as moulded objects like lamps figurines" (Kehrberg 2009, p. 493:4). The most well-known of the wares produced here were the Jerash Bowls and the so-called Jerash Lamps. One kiln has been identified here, as well as a domiciles for the potters. During the 5th c.
