Gerasa Early Byzantine lamps (the 'Late Gerasa' lamp)
Jordan/Northern Highlands
4th-5th c. CE
Byzantine
General Information
The Gerasa Early Byzantine lamps, also called “Late Gerasa lamps” (LGL) partially overlap, and then succeed the locally manufactured “HIPPO” lamps as the primary product of the Gerasa Hippodrome Byzantine-era Workshop. These lamps have a low, ovoid body, wide filling hole, broad rim, and wide tongue-shaped handle. As the preceding Late Roman “HIPPO” type, this type also was the product of a simplified production process in which both handle and rim decoration were part of the mold itself. The simple, repeating designs include closely spaced herringbones, encircled beads, and narrow rays.
