Egyptian Early Islamic Alkaline Glazed Ware
Egypt/Delta/Lower Egypt
10th-12th c. CE
Fatimid/Ayyubid
General Information
Egyptian Alkaline Glazed Wares have been found in Fatimid and earlier contexts in Fustat (old Cairo), where they were very likely produced and initially also exported to sites in the southern Levant. The manufacture spurred the production of Levantine Early Islamic Alkaline Glazed wares elsewhere, e.g., Beirut (BEY 002 kilns) and Damascus (Damascus early Islamic pottery workshops).
Until these other production sites became known, Alkaline Glazed ware vessels found in Israel were attributed to Egypt.
