Excavations outside the Damascus city wall near the southeastern Bāb Kīsān gate recovered pottery workshops that manufactured vessels of Alkaline Glazed Earthenwares identical to those discovered in excavations of the city's Citadel, dating to the 10th or 11th century (McPhillips 2012:450, 453). In addition to the production site at the Bāb Kīsān gate, a large potters’ quarter lay outside Bāb Šarqí, the eastern city gate. It includes a large area of kilns likely organized on an industrial level rather than artisanal.
