Aswan Amphorae
Egypt/Upper Egypt
1st century - 5th century CE
Roman, Byzantine
General Information
This group includes containers that were produced for the transport of foodstuffs, such as oil or wine, however, it is not easy to differentiate between containers made for transporting goods and those made for household activities. The amphorae of Aswan Pink Clay were produced starting in the early Imperial period and were widely distributed in late antiquity.
The amphorae of this group were made of the characteristic Aswan Pink Clay. Most pieces have a red slip on their exterior that differs greatly from the color of the fabric. On the interior of the wall and base remnants of a resin can be identified on some fragments. This was applied to the interior as a protective layer in order to prevent the slow leakage of liquid content.
