General Information
This ware family includes vessels that are wheel made, usually of red or orange fabric but also light ground fabric. All or much of the surface is covered in a red slip, but vessels were not painted. The slip usually fired red-brown to orange but could also turn purple in an oxidizing environment, brown to blackish color in a reduced environment, and mottled red and black in an uneven firing environment. It is possible to confuse fragments of Iron Age Red Slip vessels with the unpainted portions of Cypriot Iron Age Black-on-Red or other Cypriot Iron Age painted wares.
