The blue-gray fine core (Iron
Age) fabric of this object was noted at Polis-Peristeries in the Chrysochou
Valley of Cyprus especially in Cypro-Geometric period ceramics of Cypriot Red
Slip (Iron Age) and Cypriot Black-on-Red (Iron Age) wares, but also occasionally
in other wares such as Cypriot White Painted (Iron Age).
It
is a hard, fine fabric fired blue-gray (see examples for colors). It looks to
the naked eye more like the hard-fired blue-gray core of some Late Bronze Age
Red Lustrous ware vessels rather than the more typical fabric of Iron Age
Cypriot Red Slip and Black-on-Red wares. This fabric would be a good subject
for petrographic study and analysis.
