Egypt/Upper Egypt
Hellenistic/Ptolemaic
Transport/Storage
Calcareous and ferruginous clay matrix, containing also fine micas, optically slightly active clay matrix. 9% inclusions. Diagnostic are large partially decayed carbonates/micrite, mica schists (muscovite) and quartz-mica schists. Accessories are micas, fine quartz, hornblende and volcanic rock fragments, testifying to a contribution of Nile sediments in the "Egyptian Marl Clay" paste. Due to the lack of comparative data, no exact provenance can be suggested. The composition would not speak against an origin from the northern Upper Egyptian Nile valley.
