Buto/Tell el Fara'in, in the northwestern corner of the Nile Delta, not too far from Alexandria, was a center of pottery production for centuries, from the early Hellenistic era through late Roman times. To date productions attested here include Ptolemaic Black Slipped Ware, Ptolemaic-Roman Red Slipped ware, and Roman Red Common Ware. Many zones of workshops and kilns have been excavated across the site. The kilns were a type with a firebox on the bottom and a high floor, pierced by holes. Heat was carried through terracotta flue pipes throughout the chamber.
