General Information
Middle-Late Cypriot White Painted Handmade wares are a broad group made in many places across the island. All share the following characteristics: unslipped (sometimes self-slipped in firing) surface on which painted decoration was applied that differs in color from red to black based on the firing of the vessel. The surface may be burnished or matte and may be white, tan, pink, red, gray, etc. depending on the firing conditions. The painted decoration may be lustrous or matte. Based on the decoration of the vessels, this ware traditionally is subdivided into White Painted II, III, IV, V, and VI. White Painted I is the same as Cypriot White Painted Phila. The shapes are many, but they are mainly tablewares or smaller vessels, both open and closed shapes.
