Hellenistic/Ptolemaic, Roman
General Information
This group includes containers that were mainly produced for the transport of foodstuffs, such as oil or wine. The amphorae of shale were only produced in the Ptolemaic period.
They make up a very small percentage of the amphora assemblage discovered in Syene/Aswan.
Many large red-orange shale particles that are smaller in comparison to other shale fabrics. The large white inclusions are characteristic. Based on archaeometric analyses they have been identified as gypsum. Their provenance is unclear but the Dakhla Oasis is probable (Peloschek 2015, 146).
