General Information
Heavy and Coarse wares (HCW) were generally used to make pithoi and amphorae, but also other shapes. Gravel and other large coarse inclusions are normal. Most HCW vessels were undecorated, but some carried decoration typical of Black-on-Red (BOR) and White Painted (CWP) wares; some scholars classify decorated examples as belonging to these wares because of their surface treatment. Yet it is possible to distinguish decorated Heavy and Coarse ware vessels from finer decorated vessels by the increased inclusions. Thus when possible this information should be included in the vessel description.
