General Information
The Plain White wares of Iron Age Cyprus are a broad ware family made in many places around the island. Plain White wares are a variant of Iron Age - Hellenistic Plain Light wares that have an applied white slip on it. This sharp color difference between the core and the surface of a vessel, however, has been thought to come from a quickly reducing atmosphere, which changes the color of the surface and the core at different rates (Hocking 2001), and thus creates a slip-like appearance. This firing technique may be characteristic of one or more regions of the island; this aspect could be clarified by further research.
