Roman, Byzantine
General Information
The Aswan White Slip Ware can be separated into two groups based on characteristics of its slip. The first group includes the small bowl type 24.1-2, cup type 2 and 25 (according to Katzjäger 2017). The shapes of the second group in many ways resemble the shapes of the Aswan Red Slip ware A (Groups O and OP) and Byzantine-early Islamic Nile Silt Red Slip ware (Groups K and K1) and also refers to already known shapes of other Mediterranean wares. This group mainly comprises open shapes, such as small bowls, bowls, and plates.
The Aswan White Slip Ware can be separated into two groups based on characteristics of its slip. The first group has a rough, dull, thick slip, the second group exhibits a smooth, dull to dull
glossy slip.
The small bowls (Schale 24.1-2, 25 - Katzjäger 2017)) of this ware are generally made of Aswan Pink/Kaolinitic/Iron Ore.
