Transport/Storage
Surface 5YR 6/8, Color brighter where burnished on rim: horizontal burnishing on top and exterior of rim leads to shiny stripes. Rest of body well wiped and smoothed exterior. Interior carefully smoothed by hand, in places leaving smooth shallow finger-wipe traces running diagonally upward. On body, with tops of letters at the height of the greatest diameter, Phrygian graffito reading left to right: B E N A G O N O S Ca. 16 cm to right of final sigma, four compass-drawn circles with central dot (D. 5.5 cm), the top three angling slightly down to right and the fourth placed below, between two rightmost. These are thought to be capacity marks.
Hand made coil
Fired orange-red throughout.
Mended, complete, with several missing sherds. This vessel is unusually intact; the size of sherds especially on the upper body is enormous and its rim largely intact. Breaking mostly in bottom third of vessel and along side to left of inscription. Right side (with capacity marks) intact for entire upper two-thirds of vessel. Measured capacity of pithos (using wheat): 95.04 liters.
