Pattern Burnished/Glättmuster Gray Ware (GGW)
Turkey/Marmara
c. 2000-1750 BCE
Middle Bronze Age
General Information
The ceramics from Troy V and VI feature three categories of gray wares, Pattern Burnished/Glättmuster Gray Ware (GGW) and two varieties of Anatolian Gray Ware (AGW I and AGW II). Pattern Burnished/Glättmuster Gray Ware was originally simply called “Gray Ware” by Blegen. GGW can be either handmade or wheel-made. It occurs in both Troy V and early in Troy VI in small percentages. Shapes range from Bead-Rim Bowls (G-series), small cups (CC1a), amphoriskoi (T2a) to jugs and bowls (F1b), from most common to least. The shapes and decoration evince a close relationship to the inland İnegöl Grayware, but they are not the same ware.
This ware's typical feature is a sandwich-effect on the break, with a relatively well delineated, medium-thick dark grey core with light grey borders, a feature also typical of the Inegöl Grey Ware.
