Phocaean Red Slip Ware (LRC)
Turkey/Aegean
4th-7th century CE
Late Roman, Early Byzantine
General Information
This ceramic group found in the works of the Athens Agora was first described by Waage in 1933 and named as Late Roman C according to its clay and lining properties (Waage 1933, 298-304, Fig. 4.). In 1980, he used Foça Red Slip Ceramics in addition to Late Roman C based on burnt bowl fragments by Hayes in Phocaean (Hayes 1980, 525.). In the studies carried out for the production of Phokaia Red Slip Ceramic Group, a report was prepared by Langlotz about the production site of Phocaean in 1969, but no nomenclature was made (Hayes 1980, 525.). According to Mayet and Picon analysis, it was revealed that the imported goods were produced here according to the clay characteristics of the samples taken from the clay beds found near Phocaean (Mayet-Picon 1986, 133).
