General Information
Jerash Byzantine-early Islamic Light Grey Ware (JLGW) seems to be made of the same clay as Jerash Byzantine-early Islamic Orange-Red Ware but was made using a different firing process. The ceramic repertoire is composed mostly by large bowls, basins, jars and especially amphorae. This ware first appears in the Byzantine period and increases in the 7th-8th cent. in Umayyad times. Likewise the O-RW ware, the vessels sometimes carry white painted decoration.
Local fabric, well fired, wheel thrown . The colour ranges from light grey to grey (Munsell 5YR 6/1; 5/1); the fabric is hard with low porosity. The inclusions are tiny, few of calcite and very few of grits. Wheel-trown.
