Nicosia Hellenistic Cooking ware 1
Cyprus/Western Mesoria
Earlier 3rd - Mid 2nd centuries BCE
Hellenistic
General InformationThis ware is used for nearly all cooking vessels found on the Hill at Agios Georgios. Potters used it to create one-handled chytrai, lopes, and cooking ware lids. Taken together, these cooking vessels form a singular, and quite conservative group, in much the same way as the table vessels. The assemblage is quite different from that at Kition and Pafos, and from those typical to nearby Phoenicia (eg. Beirut) and Egypt (eg. Naukratis)
Description
The fabric is sturdy, granular, and dark red or grey-brown in color, especially when compared to the thinner, redder fabric used for vessels in Nicosia Hellenistic Cooking ware 2.
