Aswan Ptolemaic Black Slipped ware
Egypt/Upper Egypt
2nd century BCE-1st century BCE
Hellenistic/Ptolemaic
General Information
The repertoire of vessel shapes mainly includes plates and cups that can be traced back to Greek traditions. Occasionally, the repertoire of shapes of the Aswan Ptolemaic Black Slipped Ware also features beakers and pitchers. In comparison to other groups, this group was in use for a relatively short period of time. The production began in the early 2nd century BCE and completely disappeared from the find assemblage of Syene by the 1st century BCE.
Similar to the Ptolemaic Black Slipped ware the vessels of this ware have a thick, dull glossy black to gray-black slip and a gray fabric. Vessels of this ware were manufactured from different clay pastes of Aswan Pink Clay that acquired a gray appearance through a reduction firing atmosphere.
