Upper Egyptian Roman Sigillata

1st - 2nd centuries CE
Roman
General Information
This ware is used for Upper Egyptian open, table forms. The vessels carry red slip and black, painted decoration. This is an Upper Egyptian imitation of Eastern Sigillata A. For the moment, the workshop has been identified generally as Upper Egypt, but one workshop for certain was in Medamoud.
This is a calcareous clay (BE1 tradeoff variante 1) from Upper Egypt that is of fine, sandy texture and is dense. It is likely derived from the Qena Marl fabric of the Late Period and Ptolemaic period, but it is much more coarse. The color is pale yellow or pale red to green with yellow and red inclusions.
