Ptolemaic table ware with lime
Egypt/Delta/Lower Egypt
200 BCE
Hellenistic/Ptolemaic
General InformationThis ware is defined by four vessels from a large floor deposit at Tell Timai (ca. 200 BCE) and miscellaneous bowls and saucers found from unsecured contexts at Tell Timai. A limited range of shapes have been observed: incurved rim bowls, everted rim bowls, and thickened rim saucers.
Description
Possibly a mixture of alluvial Nile silt and marl clay. The clay body is densely packed, though sections are granular in breaks. Vessels are consistently fired hard, creating a body that is strong, with a hefty feel. Small and medium-sized white sub-angular bits of lime or limestone are very common and evenly distributed through the matrix. These inclusions are visible on the surfaces, creating a speckled appearance. Some tiny white rounded mineral inclusions (quartz?) are visible in the sections.
