Lebanon/Biqa Valley
12th - 14th centuries CE
Frankish/Ayyubid, Later Islamic - Fatimid/Mamluk
General Information
Description
Orange/light red body (Munsell Soil Color Charts: 2.5 YR 6/6 - 6/8) with medium to frequent whitish inclusions. Smaller red and black inclusions. The ware is quite gritty.
This ceramic body shares some similarities with the group of cooking (partially glazed) ware (see Ma 2b).
Ma 1a is associated to Slip painted decoration (slip painting under transparent yellow or green glaze) and incised decoration (usually with green glaze). The latter has a grittier body, with a higher amount of mineral inclusions.
This material comes from the area of Bustan Nassif in Baalbek (Lebanon).
