General Information
Thin or medium matt to slightly lustrous flaking red slip (predominantly 2.5YR5/6, 2.5YR4/6). Most vessels are relatively crudely made with medium to thick walls, uneven surfaces and irregular rims. Burnishing strokes are sometimes visible but cover little of the surface. Vessels are rarely incised or differentially fired. Some forms reproduce Red Polished Philia shapes, others occur only in Philia Red Slip (neck juglets, vats, lids and dishes).
Fine to medium yellowish brown to brown fabric (predominantly 10YR 6/4, 10YR 5/4, 7.5YR 5/4), medium-soft to medium-hard, often with a central core and a medium to large number of small, medium and occasionally large inclusions, frequently visible on the surface. Thin or medium matt to slightly lustrous flaking red slip (predominantly 2.5YR5/6, 2.5YR4/6).
