Amman Red Grey 1
Jordan/Central Highlands
1000 to 700 BCE
Iron Age IIA, Iron Age IIB
General Information
The fabric-group was established during the 2024 and 2025 excavation-campaign at the citadel of Amman (ammap-project).
A distinct features is the (red-)burnished surface (wheel-burnished as well as irregular burnish) that occurs frequently but is not compulsary.
Vessel types: above all bowls with different rim-styles, but also some jugs
Brown-red and red colour. The temper consists of small to very small mineral inclusions in red, brown, grey, and white. Their size ranges from 0.05 to 0.5 mm, although the white and light-grey inclusions can occasionally be slightly larger. The fabric is very dense and contains no visible voids; it was fired to a medium-hard or soft hardness.
The fabric-group can be subdivided into two variants, based on the overall colour of the sherd: a red (ammap - red grey 1) and a brown variant (ammap - brown grey 1) can be distinguished. The repertoire of vessel types and shapes is almost identical. "Ammap - red grey 1" primarly comprises tableware, particularly small to medium-sized bowls and plates.
The surface may exhibit a thin red or reddish-brown slip, which can be either wheel-burnished or irregularly burnished in certain areas of the vessel. Closely related to the brown variant in terms of colour and tempering, is “Amman brown-grey sandwich”.
This is referred to as “ammap - red grey 1" in the Amman Citadel Excavation Project recording system.
