Jerash Early Islamic Red Painted Orange Ware (JRPOW)
Jordan/Northern Highlands
mid 8th-9th c. CE.
Early Islamic - Umayyad/Abbasid
General Information
Jerash Red Painted Ware (JRPOW )vessels are well attested in contexts dated at least to the mid-8th century and still present in the early Abbasid ones. The RPO ware assemblage mainly consists of jugs, jars, and bowls. In particular the type of bowl with cylindrical body, indistictive rim and flat or curved base is made in Jerash, as proposed by Gawlikowsky, in the South Decumanus kilns in the so-called Umayyad House (Gawlikowsky 1996). It is most likley that the closed shapes are made in Jerash as well, since the fabric looks the same.
