Hauran late Hellenistic Handmade Calcite-tempered ware
Syria/Hauran
2nd-1st c. BCE
Late Hellenistic, Early Roman
General Information
Hauran late Hellenistic handmade calcite-tempered ware has been identified at the Roman sanctuary of Sīʿ, although the absence of basaltic inclusions suggests that it was not local to that site. M. Barret, L. Courtois and F. Villeneuve characterize it as thick, without wheel marks, light in color, with many large inclusions, particularly calcite, and whose surface is irregular and pierced with small holes. There is always a firing core. The color of the outer wall varies from light beige to pink orange. The thick core is dark blue gray gray. Only a limited repertory of forms is attested, primarily thick jars with and handles oval in section. It appears only in contexts dating to the 2nd and 1st c. BCE.
In Rohmer's 2020 publication of his Hauran survey, this is classified as "pâte C."
