Capital city of the Ugaritic kingdom that thrived between 1500 and 1200 BCE. Archaeological evidence indicate that the city was destroyed by the Sea Peoples around 1190 BCE. The site was occupied as early as the Neolithic Period. The site had contacts with both the Egyptian and Hittite Kingdoms. French archaeological expeditions have uncovered the city's palace, tombs, temples, and houses.
