Description

The clay has a calcareous matrix containing c. 10 percent of silty quartz and minute laths of mica, and partly vitrified to olive-green tan. The sand size non plastic inclusions compose c. 15 percent of the sherd’s volume. They comprise 0.2–0.4 mm relicts of limestone or chalk, 0.1–0.2 mm grains of quartz, accompanied by few silicified foraminifers, laths of mica, specks of iron oxides and one 0.1 mm olivine grain. Because of the stage of vitrification of the matrix, firing temperature was estimated c. 800°C, or, probably, slightly higher.
