Composed of a well-sintered clay-rich matrix with a grainy texture, when well-fired usually exhibits a very fine, sometimes powdery / soapy texture. non-plastics well-sorted and exhibit a bimodal distribution. The grains exhibit high-moderate sphericity and can be rounded to subangular. Fine silt to coarse sand sized particles occur. Grains are often randomly oriented, although a preferred orientation is noted in some samples with greater amounts of organic temper. Main non-plastic inclusions are fragments of fin grained basalt (10-24%); grains are always of low-moderate sphericity and are most commonly subhedral. Crystal formation is poor, indicating rapid cooling. Fine sand sized quartz and calcareous grains are sometimes found (5%).
