Most of basaltic soils are concentrated in the eastern Lower Galilee and in the Golan Heights, as this is the main distribution area of the basalt rocks in Israel. Similar basaltic derived soils have been described from Lebanon and Syria.
The major soil units that are derived from basalt are vertisols, proto-vertisols and Brown and Red Mediterranean soils. The vertisols and the brown and red Mediterranean soils have plastic horizons (Singer 2007).
Ferruginous, reddish-brown matrix commonly rich in silt-sized quartz and plagioclase. Heavy minerals include olivine, pyroxene and opaque (mainly iron oxides). The sand-sized non-plastic components contain poorly sorted basalt fragments and basalt derived minerals.
