Fine, dense and hard calcareous fabric with low porosity. The fracture is generally homogeneous and light orange to pink in colour, although some examples display a clearly zoned section, with a beige or light grey core and light orange outer margins. Visible inclusions comprise small limestone particles, fine rounded matt quartz grains, occasional grey decomposed calcareous particles, and brown clay pellets or grog. The surfaces are usually light orange to pale beige. Medamud C1 belongs to the Theban marl-clay tradition and is macroscopically comparable to Aston’s K100 and K200, Marl A4 variant 2, Schreiber’s LDP Marl 1, LDP Marl 1 variant 2 and LDP Marl 3, and the Karnak BE 1 fabric tradition.
