A kiln complex of the Late Byzantine period (550-650 CE) that produced the latest form of Gaza wine jars was uncovered approximately 2 km southeast of Tel Ashkelon in 2019. The complex includes three firing pits connected by subterranean tunnels wherein the kilns were fired. The complex is very similar to a complex discovered earlier in Yavneh.
The complex appears to have been built in a small monastic site that included three winepresses.
